OpenAI’s GPT-4 API Now Generally Available and Ready for Playground Use

OpenAI announced on July 6th that they are making gpt-4 openly available to all the Api users.

OpenAI has made a significant stride in the field of artificial intelligence by announcing the general availability of its GPT-4 API. This API is designed to provide developers with a more capable and user-friendly experience. The GPT-4 API is now accessible to all paying API customers, and it’s ready to be used in the playground at no additional cost. Previously GPT-4 was only available to selected few and to users that were approved by OpenAI. OpenAI playground can be found here

The GPT-4 model is OpenAI’s most capable model to date. Since its introduction in March, millions of developers have requested access to the GPT-4 API. The range of innovative products leveraging GPT-4 is growing every day. Now, all existing API developers with a history of successful payments can access the GPT-4 API with 8K context. OpenAI plans to extend access to new developers by the end of this month and then start raising rate-limits depending on compute availability

In addition to the GPT-4 API, OpenAI is also making the GPT-3.5 Turbo, DALL·E, and Whisper APIs generally available. These models have demonstrated stability and readiness for production-scale use.

However, with the introduction of the GPT-4 API, OpenAI has decided to retire some of its older models using the Completions API in six months. While the Completions API will remain accessible, it will be labeled as “legacy” in the developer documentation. Future model and product improvements will focus on the Chat Completions API, and there are no plans to publicly release new models using the Completions API. Starting January 4, 2024, older completion models will no longer be available.

OpenAI recognizes that these changes represent a significant shift for developers using older models. However, the company assures that it is not a decision taken lightly. OpenAI will be in touch with impacted users over the coming days to assist with the transition.
